The plus side to both is that the drive (or ferry) is fairly short and hassle-free. Or stay close to the attractions and do the opposite route to get to the beach. Stay close to the beach and commute to the attractions in and around downtown. The big decision for visitors is where to stay in San Diego – at one of the great beaches or in downtown San Diego. Don’t even think about going before or after a Padres game.San Diego is a great city. Housed in a former 1912 warehouse replete with roll-up garage doors, brick walls, and exposed ceilings, Basic serves delicious thin-crust pizza straight from the brick oven, and also has a good bar scene. Right across from Petco Park, Basic (2-minute walk) is anything but. On your way there, pop inside the dome-topped Central Library - the views from the top are unparalleled in downtown San Diego.
